Smart, Family-Focused New Construction in Northeast Wisconsin
The goal was simple: create a comfortable, practical new-construction home with plenty of room for a young family to grow. The layout includes four bedrooms upstairs, an open main level, a first-floor flex room, a large garage, and smart storage where families need it most.
For this family, the Weston plan made sense because it gave them a lot of usable space in a smart layout. The kitchen, dining room, and living room stay connected for everyday family life, while the flex room, mudroom, walk-in pantry, and upstairs bedrooms add the function families are looking for. It’s an effective design for the amount of space it provides, but it still feels warm, finished, and personal.
This project is a good example of how the Midwest Design Homes pre-designed plans can give homeowners a strong starting point, then come to life with the finishes, features, and details that make it feel like home.

A Closer Look at the Layout
The Weston plan is straightforward in a good way. It gives the family an open living space on the main floor, four bedrooms upstairs, useful storage, and room to grow without adding space they did not need.
Open Main-Level Living
The main level was designed to keep daily life connected. The kitchen, dining area, and living room all flow together, so the family can cook, eat, relax, and spend time together without feeling separated into different rooms.
This layout also makes the home feel larger than the square footage suggests. The sightlines are open from the kitchen through the dining area and into the living room, while the large windows bring in natural light across the main floor. The fireplace adds a finished focal point to the living room without taking away from the open feel.
A Practical Kitchen With Plenty of Workspace
The kitchen in this home is very usable. The large island gives the family extra prep space, seating space, and a natural place to set out food when people are gathered on the main level.
We also included a walk-in pantry just off the kitchen, which is a big help for keeping everyday items tucked away but still easy to reach. Between the pantry, the full-height cabinetry, and the island, this kitchen gives the family a lot of storage without making the room feel crowded.
First-Floor Flex Room
The flex room near the front of the home gives the family a space that can change over time. Right away, it could work well as a home office, playroom, homework area, or sitting room. As the family’s needs change, the room can change with them.
That kind of flexibility is one of the reasons this plan works well for a young family. Not every room has to be locked into one purpose from day one. This space gives them options without adding unnecessary square footage to the home.
Storage Where It Actually Gets Used
A family home needs storage in the right places, not just more closets on paper. In this home, the mudroom/drop zone sits right off the garage, giving the family a place for coats, shoes, bags, and everyday items as they come and go.
The walk-in pantry, bedroom closets, upstairs walk-in closets, and laundry storage all add to the function of the home. These are the details that help the floor plan live well after move-in, especially for a busy family.
Four Bedrooms Upstairs
This plan keeps all four bedrooms on the second floor, which is a layout many families prefer. The bedrooms are close together, but each person still has their own space.
The primary suite includes a tray ceiling, private bath, and walk-in closet. The additional bedrooms are grouped nearby with access to a full bath, making the second floor simple and practical for family routines. It’s a straightforward layout, but that’s what makes it work.
A Mudroom Entry
Coming in from the garage, the family has a practical drop zone in the mudroom before entering the main living space. The built-in bench, hooks, and storage area help keep the everyday clutter from spilling into the kitchen and dining area.
For families, this is one of those features that gets used constantly. It makes mornings, school days, sports practices, and grocery trips a little easier because there is a dedicated place for the things that come in and out of the house every day.
Large Garage Space
The garage was one of the key highlights of this project. At 745 square feet, it gives the family more room than a standard garage for vehicles, bikes, tools, lawn equipment, outdoor gear, and seasonal storage.
That extra space adds a lot of day-to-day function without taking away from the finished living areas. For a family home like this, the garage becomes part of the storage plan, not just a place to park.
Room to Grow in the Lower Level
The lower level was left unfinished, which gives the family flexibility for the future. It can be used for storage now and finished later if they want more living space, a rec room, workout area, guest space, or hobby room.
For this type of family home, that future potential matters. The home works well today, but there is still room to grow into it over time.

A Personalized New Construction Home With Space, Storage, and Flexibility
This is the kind of home we like to build: practical, comfortable, and thoughtfully planned from the start.
The Weston plan gave this family the space they needed without adding rooms or square footage they did not. Every part of the layout is doing work.
That is what we aim for with our pre-designed plans and our clear process. They give homeowners a strong starting point, but they still leave room for the home to feel personal. For this family, the result was a new construction home with plenty of function, warm finishes, and room to grow.

Custom Home
"We loved buying our home with MDH so much that we hired them to finish our basement. We purchased one of their spec homes after construction and were impressed by the design—my wife loved it as is. Chris, our Project Manager for closing, made the process smooth. Later, Danny managed our basement project, which was completed quickly, professionally, and stress-free. We highly recommend MDH for high-quality new homes, and for more customized builds, their Jon Huss Custom Homes division."

Custom Home
"We bought our house (turnkey) in April 2023. We couldn't be more happy with it. We didn't have to pick anything out which made it really easy. We just had to add our own decorative touches. Love the storage in the walk in pantry!"
